How to Grow Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree?
Growing a Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) successfully requires proper care in terms of light, water, humidity, and soil. Here’s a complete guide to help your plant thrive:
1. Light Requirements
Needs bright, indirect light for at least 6-8 hours per day.
A south- or east-facing window is ideal.
Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Rotate the plant occasionally for even growth.
2. Watering
Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry (usually every 7-10 days).
Use room-temperature water and ensure excess water drains out of the pot.
Avoid overwatering, as root rot is a common problem.
3. Humidity & Temperature
Thrives in 50-65% humidity. If your home is dry, use a humidifier or mist the leaves occasionally.
Prefers temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid cold drafts, vents, and sudden temperature changes.
4. Soil & Potting
Use well-draining, rich soil, such as a mix of peat-based potting soil with perlite or sand.
Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Repot every 2-3 years or when the roots outgrow the container.
5. Fertilizing
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., NPK 3-1-2) once a month.
Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
6. Pruning & Maintenance
Prune leggy growth to maintain shape.
Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust and help with photosynthesis.
If leaves start turning brown, check for overwatering, dry air, or sunburn.
7. Common Problems & Solutions
Brown edges? Increase humidity and check for underwatering.
Drooping leaves? Usually a sign of overwatering or lack of light.
Yellow leaves? Possible overwatering or poor drainage.
Leaves not growing? Move to a brighter spot and fertilize during the growing season.
